Consumption – the consumption of the institution for the music industry is what we, the audience, and possibly one of the most important people in the music industry as we are bringing in the profit for the music industry as we are spending our money on music products. This is greatly affected by technology and the online age, just like marketing is greatly affected by this too, depending on how the way to download has been marketed is usually how the majority of people will download. I think one of the main things that tell people how to download successfully is word of mouth, if everyone is downloading using itunes then word will eventually get round and people will think that is the best way to download. However, this is not the case as since people have been able to download from illegal sites where you are able to change youtube videos and convert them into mp3 tracks which can them be imported into your itunes library and transferred onto your ipod which is a positive in some respects but also not in others as this makes it a lot easier for different files to be shared via email and other social networking and instant messaging components, which therefore makes it easier for virus’ to spread but not only that it is slowly killing the music industry. The music industry needs the profit to keep going so if everyone is downloading illegally then there will be no cause for sites that support independent and major labels and there will be no money to keep artists and bands running. I don’t think today’s generation is aware of just how dangerous free downloads are for the music industry but then at the end of the day, why would you care? If everyone around you is downloading for free, and you know this because of word of mouth then why would you pay to download music? Its almost as if you are just cheating yourself when you might as well get the music for free if the opportunity is there. So when did the opportunity become available? When did it become okay for this to be taking place? The truth of it is its still not okay for this to be going on, as its part of the copyright act.

devices
The devices that are available for people to use nowadays, are things like iPods, mp3s, iPhones, blackberries and pretty much all phones now have the ability to hold music which means that music is just spreading continuously as people can also Bluetooth one another songs and various other media files. Music is stored on computer, more often than not using itunes but sometimes can be stored on files on the hard drive, and then transferred to portable devices from there or transferred to be stored on another computer by using a USB stick.

facts and figures continued
More than 31,000 new album titles (including re-issues) was released in the UK last year, second only to the US - which demonstrates the commitment to investment from the UK record companies.
UK record companies invest 17% of turnover in A&R. DTI data shows that other industries with traditions oh heavy R&D expenditure such as pharmaceuticals actually spend a smaller proportion of revenues on developing new products than the UK record industry invests in the development of new artists.
British artists accounted for 49.4% of artist albums sold in the UK in 2005 - the highest annual amount total since 1998. this represented sales of 62m units - the highest ever total in a single year by british musicians.

The Music Industry and how it works
The way that audiences listen and consume music has changed, due to the fact that we now have the ability to be able to download songs and music without having to manually carry around records and CDs, we find this a better method because it is more practical. We are also able to use file sharing, however this is actually illegal, this can be done through different music sites where you are able to successfully download music for free, this can also be done by the use of Bluetooth, receiving and sharing different pieces of media with absolutely no fee whatsoever. The amount that artists are gaining from selling their music is massively taken down because of record deals and being on a record label, bands such as arctic monkeys made themselves successful by putting their music on online networking sites so people can download their music and the whole profit goes straight to the arctic monkeys then they decide on a good deal that suits them as they have the power of being successful, they then decided to be on a record deal because it may benefit them but it is a deal that is not taking a massive percentage of their wage. Nowadays you can actually download a program of the internet to be able to record yourself singing and put this online on websites such as YouTube and other social networking sites, this is to help them get noticed and scouted but ultimately this is so they can achieve a record deal, to help them to become more successful and get their name and music heard. The real money that artists can make is from tours and doing gigs that the audience are paying 40-45 pounds to watch, the money they get from that is the full percentage as the record deal have not been involved unless they have been involved in setting it up.
